From Mumbler to Morgan Freeman! How To Find Your Authentic Voice

You are a mumbler but you want to speak like Morgan Freeman. What do you do? In this video, I’m going to show you how to go from being a mumbler to speaking just like Morgan Freeman. Let’s get started. You’re a mumbler but you want to have a voice like Morgan Freeman who is known for having a wonderful, rich, authentic voice. What do you do? I’ll show you three simple techniques to learn how to sound just like Morgan Freeman. The first step is to find a good voice and speech coach or to do what Morgan Freeman did. He went to LA City College and he trained with a wonderful voice and speech coach that he talks about, who trained him how to use his voice.

He taught him how to place his voice, how to warm up his voice, how to have good diction by really saying every consonant and every word throughout the sentence, really understanding that diction, voice, voice placement are all teachable, learnable skills that you can improve in and that’s what he started to do. I encourage you to do the same thing, whether you come to me or another voice and speech coach or you do it on your own. Start to read out loud great literature, feel how it sounds in your mouth, how it feels as it comes out on your tongue and your lips, how it is to use your breath. Do that every day and your voice will start to get better. Do tongue twisters. Say them out loud starting slowly, going more quickly. Use any of the over 100 videos that I have out there for you where I show you how to really use and improve your voice. That’s the first step.

Number two, Morgan Freeman has a quality of authenticity. When you hear him, you believe him. He speaks from the heart. Any great actor or any great speaker has a voice of authenticity. How can you have that? Well, authenticity can so often times be strangled by tension. When we get tense, we get an excited way, we go too fast or we choke on our words, any of those things take away from your authenticity. That’s why I’m always encouraging you to try meditation, finding a way to calm the mind by doing breathing exercises, finding a way to deepen the breath and support the voice, by doing yoga, again, focusing on that breath and really using the whole body to support the voice. Anything that you can do to come from a centered, comfortable, relaxed place is going to help you come from your authentic voice.

Number three, what you can do is start to do what Morgan Freeman does. Very simple. He talks about it all the time. That is to yawn. Just by yawning, you relax the throat, you open the mouth, and you get the breath to support your voice. It’s a great way to relax your voice. Remember, that’s one of the qualities that I love in Morgan Freeman’s voice, is that quality of being relaxed. By yawning, by speaking from an authentic place, and by training your voice, you can have an authentic voice and, in its own way, will sound like Morgan Freeman because it’s truthful, it’s powerful, and it’s authentic.
